I have encountered a few articles in the last week that address the issue of high levels of lead in children's toys. Even things such as Barbie, Dora the explorer game packs, Bob the builder dolls, Fisher Price's Sesame Street dolls, etc... are included in the list of such toys. This has a lot to do with the fact that most of the manufacturing of toys has shifted to China where they use lead-based paint. While there have been a series of recalls and the industries are trying to remediate the problem, I would suggest we all play it safe this holiday season and steer clear of potentially hazardous toys.

Look for toys manufactured in the U.S. or that come from fair trade stores where you can find toys made of natural materials such as wood or cotton fibers.
And keep in mind that kids have extensively elaborate imaginations and can enjoy things that don't dance and beep at them. Tovi will turn a wooden block into a sleeping baby and lay her baby to rest on a bed of books. (And it isn't because she lacks real dolls or doll beds......)
